Lockapalooza is a celebration of Rochester's whitewater kayaking
community.
Lockapalooza 2008 is a two-day event that offers a variety of activities
for kayakers, including free instruction for participants, organized
races, and freestyle competition. The event is a big attraction for
spectators and a great place to see the possibilities of our growing sport.
GWC's Lock 32 Whitewater Park provides opportunities for youth and adults of
all abilities to get on the water!
The course itself has a set of well defined squirt lines, two waves and
two holes. The holes enable vertical moves (cartwheels), front flips
(loops) and lots of other tricks. Best of all, we have consistent water all
summer long.
There will be free informal instruction in the morning and early
afternoon. Later in the day the competition begins with events such as
slalom racing, boatercross, and freestyle rodeo. Participants are
divided into men’s junior, youth, or adult categories; women compete in
their own division.
We also invite many kayaking industry companies to participate, including
rafting companies, kayak manufacturers, retailers and other kayak schools. This is a great way to find out more about the companies in our area that
support the kayaking community. It's also a good place to demo a boat or
find out about new developments in whitewater gear.
At dark we'll fire up the grill and break out the videos, including
locally produced kayaking DVDs. Free camping will be available on site.

Description of Events:
Slalom Race: Each boater heads down through the
whitewater course as fast as he/she can paddle without touching the gates!
Boatercross: Everyone makes a mad dash through the
whitewater course all at the same time, trying to get to the finish line
first...
Rodeo: Freestyle event; this is the time to show off
your best Phonix Monkey, loop, cartwheel, or helix!
The Rescue Rodeo will be a new one for us, but it sounds
like a cool idea and we're excited to give it a go. There will be an
individual swimming slalom race and a team rescue scenario competition that
will be judged on speed and safety style. Teams of four can be set up
before hand and we'll also organize pick up teams at the event. I'll
personally set the scenarios and will provide lots of variety and realistic
scenarios. It'll be a great opportunity to test yourself and your team in
real life situations and get feedback on your efforts.
