Minority Outreach Initiative

The Genesee Waterways Center is located along the banks of the Genesee River in the City of Rochester, NY, making our boathouse facilities accessible to both urban and suburban communities.  The GWC has recognized the need to create awareness among City of Rochester residents of the programs and services that we provide and the benefits that can be gained from participation in water sports.

  • GWC has partnered with the City of Rochester to offer free swimming at various City recreation centers to prepare participants for introductory rowing and kayaking courses.
  • Free Learn-To-Kayak pool sessions have been offered during the winter and spring months to generate interest in continuing to learn to kayak on moving water at Lock 32 Whitewater Park in Pittsford.  Currently, we have a pool session being offered at Adams Street Community Center on Wednesday nights, April 2-May 7, 2008. Call Adams St at 585-428-7266 to register!
  • During the summer of 2008, free Youth Kayak Clinics and Learn-To-Row courses are being offered to City of Rochester residents.  Contact GWC for more information or to register!

If you are an individual or an organization that is interested in learning about our programs through the support of the Minority Outreach Initiative, please contact us today.

We are continually seeking funding opportunities to support our programs and outreach efforts for minority youth and adults.  The Genesee Waterways Center would greatly appreciate donations in support of the Minority Outreach Initiative!

RG&E has been major sponsor of the Minority Rowing Program at GWC.  The Cross Currents rowing team was formed as a result of the success of the rowing program and competes in local regattas.  Visit the Cross Currents page for more information.
