Outrigger Canoeing

An outrigger canoe is the most stable boat you can paddle. You can step into this canoe knowing that you will stay dry and steady. The canoe here at the Genesee Waterways Center has two hulls which are connected together, looking similar to a catamaran. A trained steers person guides your group and is responsible for helping you into the boat, steering , and docking. You get to simply paddle and enjoy the scenery of Rochester’s beautiful waterways.

Jan Whitaker also runs an adaptive outrigger program at our location. Her company, Cape Ability Outrigger Ohana, has a mission of “providing opportunity for individuals with disabilities to gain confidence and dignity through participation in paddle sports, recreation, and related educational programs”. She and her husband, Don Whitaker, do a terrific job of serving many in the Rochester area.

She also runs the largest annual outrigger canoe race in the Eastern United States. This year’s Rochester River Challenge will happen on Saturday, September 17th. The race is an inclusive paddling event that draws people from local neighborhoods, companies, and organizations to support Cape Ability Outrigger Ohana in its mission to make paddling opportunities available to individuals with physical or intellectual disabilities. The race also supports wounded warriors with a weekend of activities.
