Outrigger Canoeing

About Outrigger Canoeing

The outrigger is a type of canoe featuring one or more lateral support floats known as outriggers, which are fastened to one or both sides of the main hull. The outrigger bestows greater stability and seaworthiness upon a canoe. Smaller canoes often employ a single outrigger on the port side, while larger canoes usually employ a double outrigger configuration.

At the Genesee Waterways Center, we use the double outrigger configuration so that we can accommodate a larger number of people, while providing greater stability and accessibility to our paddlers.  The outrigger canoe is steered by a trained steersperson, so you just get in and paddle!

Our Programs

The GWC, in collaboration with SportsNet , a program of the Rochester Rehabilitation Center, offers recreational, fitness, and competitive outrigger canoe programs for individuals of all abilities.  Adapted equipment is available, including modified paddles and seats; we adjust to meet the needs of the individual.  We also have a mechanical Hoyer lift on the dock to assist with getting in and out of the boat.

Team opportunities are available to compete in outrigger canoeing sprints in preparation for the Rochester River Challenge in September.

Groups that have taken trips in the outrigger canoe include the Boy Scouts, the City of Rochester, CP Rochester, The Center for Disability Rights, many town recreation programs, and numerous other organizations.  It’s a great way to enjoy the outdoors while on the beautiful waterways of the Rochester area.  Fill out the group reservation form and we will connect with you to schedule your group outing!
