Courses

Outrigger Canoeing is a fantastic way to enjoy the waterways in the Rochester area during the warmer months. It is a very stable boat and can accommodate individuals of all abilities.  The outrigger is steered by trained staff who will provide basic instruction on paddling technique before heading out onto the river.   From the GWC boathouse, you may paddle up or down the Genesee River, along the Erie Canal, or into Red Creek.  Listed below are some of the programs we have available through a collaboration with SportsNet, a program of Rochester Rehabilitation Center.

Recreational Courses
Throughout the summer, recreational trips in the outrigger are scheduled during weekday evenings.  You can sign up as an individual or with a friend or two! It's a great way to get out on the water and get some exercise!

Fitness
Outrigger canoeing can also be an excellent workout!  It is amazing to feel the rock of the boat as paddlers pick up the pace, paddling in unison, and get the boat moving with the bow lifting out of the water.  During this program, the steersperson will lead you through sets of intervals to build your endurance, strength, and cardiovascular fitness.

Competitive Racing Prep (sprints)
In preparation for the Rochester River Challenge in September, this course is offered to groups who are interested in competing and building stamina for a sprint race.  It is an effective team building course, as paddlers must paddle in unison and communicate in order to be in top form.  The steersperson will prep your team during this course for the 500m sprints at the Rochester River Challenge, which take place on the Genesee River in front of the GWC Boathouse!
