Ethan Curren joined Genesee Waterways Center in 2015 as our Director of Rowing. Coach Curren spent 22 years at Community Rowing Inc. (CRI) in Brighton, MA, where more than 100 medals were won at the USRowing Club Championships under his tenure. He was integral in helping CRI grow to be the largest rowing club in North America.
While at CRI, Ethan helped build a vibrant adult sweep program. Serving at various times as the head coach of recreational sweep and competitive masters, he has worked with rowers of all ages and skill levels. He also designed and coached the sculling programs at CRI, and has extensive experience coaching both novice and experienced scullers.
Coach Curren also served as the Director of Coaching Education at CRI, helping to start the Institution for Rowing Leadership (IRL), a graduate level program in rowing coaching. At IRL he taught courses on training plan design, mental preparation for rowing and program design, and orchestrated extensive lecture series, round tables and professional development conferences for coaches.
He has served on the USRowing Youth committee since 2001 as well as the USRowing education committee and the Junior Women’s Committee. He has been honored as the Junior Coach of the Year from the Joy of Sculling, runner up for Coach of the Year from Rowing News and received a lifetime service award from the SRA Junior Conference.
Karen Morgan: Program Lead Rowing Level 2
Karen is a USRowing Level III certified coach. Karen has a special interest in injury prevention through biomechanics as well as strength and conditioning as it pertains to rowing. She is a certified Functional Strength Coach and leads our strength and conditioning program in the winter.
Karen started rowing in a learn to row program at the Genesee Waterways Center in 2007. What started as a recreational fitness activity became a passion. She dedicated herself to attaining proper rowing technique, training for optimal performance, injury prevention and effective coaching strategies. Her coaching certifications and education includes numerous coaching clinics given by top national team coaches and experts in the fields of sports psychology, nutrition for athletes and rowing biomechanics.
Karen was a competitive swimmer in high school and college. When she isn’t coaching, Karen works as a graphic designer. She and her husband George own Fusion Reactions, a design and marketing firm in Rochester.
Eliizabeth Kowalke: Program Lead Learn to Row
Liz has rowed, raced and coached with various clubs in Rochester. She teaches Learn-to-Row at GWC. Liz is a certified Level II USRowing Coach, coached at Pittsford Crew for five years and is currently an assistant coach with McQuaid’s Friends of Scholastic Rowing team. She is also an assistant coach with NAIADES Oncology Rowing.
Liz’s professional background is in Clinical Psychology, with an MFCC, and additional clinical and psychoanalytic graduate work. Liz appreciates the privilege of exploring human nature and enjoys coaching as a natural extension.
Kalila Elahi: Coach Rowing Level 2
Kalila has been an athlete for most of her life, starting with swimming when she was 8 years old. She rowed at RIT for four years and has continued to row after graduation. She majored in Biology at RIT, and is pursuing graduate school.
Emily Farrar: Head Coach Mercy Crew
Emily is the Head Coach for Mercy Crew and will be coaching our experienced masters this summer.
Emily rowed for Pittsford Crew throughout high school. She then rowed for the University of Tulsa (a Division 1 school), competing on the varsity team for four years. She is a proficient sculler as well, competing at numerous regattas in singles, doubles and quads. Emily is a USRowing Level II Coach and is pursuing continued coaching education.
Mark Salzler: Head Coach NAIADES Oncology Rowing/Coach Mercy Crew
Mark Salzler coaches for Mercy Crew. He is also the head coach for NAIADES Oncology Rowing.
Mark’s rowing background is extensive.
Jon Covney: Head Coach McQuaid/St. John Fisher
Jon is the Head Coach for McQuaid’s Friends of Scholastic Rowing team. He joined McQuaid’s program in the fall of 2016 after being the Program Coordinator and Boys Head Coach at Pittsford Crew for the past few years.
Jon is also an Alumnus of McQuaid, where he rowed for four years. He also competed for Ithaca College for four years.
Jon is a USRowing Level II Coach.
Jenny Timineri: Head Coach Nazareth College
Jenny Timineri is the current head coach for the Nazareth College Rowing program. Her rowing career began at age 13 as a rower for the Pittsford Crew women’s team, and continued as a coxswain for the University at Buffalo men. She graduated from University of Rochester in 2014 with her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, and has been a coxswain for the master’s rowing program at Genesee Waterways Center since the summer of 2014. Outside of rowing, Jenny is an epilepsy technologist at the University of Rochester Medical Center and is pursuing medical school.
