The intermediate competitive rowing program is offered with John
Bernfield’s leadership and experience, with the goal of identifying a group
of men and women who are interested in rowing well and training moderately
hard.
Open to interested experienced recreation rowers and selected highly
competitive novice rowers.
As an athletic trainer, rowing & sports performance coach, and rower with
extensive exercise science experience, John Bernfield has a unique
background that enables him to analyze rowing and break it down into its key
components. Like many coaches, he spends hours studying an athlete's
successful execution, asking why and how the athletes achieved those
results. As a rower, it is not the X’s and O’s that are important but
the mechanics of the body and how that relates to fast rowing.
Bernfield’s knowledge of mechanics enables him to draw from proven training
techniques to efficiently train the athlete while reducing his or her chance
for injury.
Summer 2011 goals:
Help each rower gain a greater understanding of the proper technique
to make them more powerful, protect them from injury and integrate that
technique into crews that are fast from point A to point B (sprints or
head races).
Improve the overall fitness of the participants including: aerobic
capacity (Vo2 Max and anaerobic threshold), muscle power & endurance and
if needed, improve flexibility.
Teach participants the level of training appropriate to compete
successfully against top level crews
Provide opportunities to learn to race effectively against top
competition.
Above all else, provide opportunities to have fun rowing boats that
are well set and responsive to rower’s power application.
Enjoy people with similar goals.
This intermediate competitive rowing program will be offered with 1 six
week session, 1 six week session and end with 1 eight week session, with
each successive session building on the skills and training provided in the
