Learn to Row - Novice

Rowing has become one of the fastest growing sports in America. It’s fast, exciting, and anybody can participate.  If you’ve always wanted to try this sport, then this program is for you.  Depending on class size, participants will row in an 8-person shell (did you know these are 60’ long?) and will learn all the basics of rowing: boat handling, how to perform the rowing stroke, and safety procedures.  This is truly the “ultimate team sport”.

This is an introductory program for individuals who have not previously participated in an on-water rowing program. The emphasis is on safety, boat handling and the introduction of biomechanically correct and efficient movement patterns. Our coaches’ use learning progressions that GWC Head Coach, John Bernfield, MS ATC CSCS has developed and refined through his experience teaching functional movement to athletes. The progression is designed to promote proper rowing technique right from the beginning to minimize the possibility of improper technique or “bad habits” being formed.

The first two classes of the Learn to Row Session will be held at the Pittsford Indoor Rowing Center, located at 2800 Clover Street, Pittsford, 14534.  The on the water sessions will be held at the Genesee Waterways Center at 149 Elmwood Ave.

You shouldn't have to purchase anything special to participate in Learn to Row. The first two classes are land-based and once on the water, dress weather-appropriate as if you were going for a jog or brisk walk:

  • Man-made layers of cool-max, polypropylene or fleece
  • Clothes that are not baggy or they will get caught in the equipment.
  • Sneakers and warm socks
  • In warm weather, hats and sunscreen are advised.
  • Gloves are not recommended for rowing.

The first TWO classes of any session are MANDATORY.  If you need to miss a class after those two, please speak with your coach.  This is a team sport and requires full participation.

Please bring a water bottle.  A signed USRowing Waiver  and a GWC Program Waiver (one per calendar) must be completed in order to row.

After you complete this Session, check out our other Rowing Opportunities!

Rowers must also be able to swim and/or float unassisted.

The Genesee Waterways Center reserves the right to cancel any class if the minimum number of participants is not met.  Minimum Rowers: 8   Maximum Rowers: 16.

There will be no refunds unless a sickness or injury occurs within the first two weeks. Refunds must be promptly requested. A $50 administrative fee will be deducted from the refund.  There will be no credits for missed classes.

Learn To Row Classes

Each participant will learn the basics of the sport of rowing while getting a good workout in an 8-person and/or 4-person rowing shell.  Classes are led by a US Rowing certified coach that will provide instruction at the pace of the class.
