The Genesee Waterways Center offers sculling classes led by experienced
coaches. Sculling concentrates on rowing with an oar in each hand, and has
become a part of one of the fastest growing sports in America. Most
scullers row in a single or double rowing shell, allowing more independence
with the sport. Sculling requires coordinating balance with graceful full
range of motion at a rate and effort which is comfortable for the individual
and is at their own pace. Usually done as an anaerobic exercise, continued
development of power and skill, the sport can grow to meet an individual’s
health and interest goals all the way from 'a row in the park' to world
class championship competition.

entry-level sculling equipment.
You will learn the basics of rowing and sculling, work with a
group of other beginners, and progress from rowing in a quad
(four-person boat) to rowing a recreational single.
Registration closes at noon on the Friday prior to the start
date. A minimum of 3 participants are required. 5
Student Maximum. GWC reserves the right to cancel the course

Bonikowski began rowing in 2007 while a sophomore at Brighton High School.
He started as a sculler, experiencing his first dip in the Genesee River,
and then joined Brighton’s sweep team in the spring of 2008. Matt has
competed as both a sweep rower and a sculler in a variety of events,
including a single and quad at the Canadian Henley, an 8+ at the Head of the
Charles and numerous other sculling (1x, 2x and 4x) and sweep events (4+ and
8+) in the Northeastern US and Canada.
Matt was a member of the Cornell crew team his freshman year, and has
continued to hone his skills outside of the academic setting, including a
week of training at Craftsbury in July of 2011. Matt is currently completing
his second year at Cornell University, majoring in environmental science
with a concentration in resource economics and policy, and now enjoys rowing
for both fitness and relaxation.
