Rowing Terminology

Blade

paddle portion of the oar
 

Bow

“front” of the boat in relation to the direction of movement
 

Catch

position at the front end of the slide, body position at which blade enters the water, also used to refer to the entry of the blade in the water
 

Coxswain

person in charge of a boat, particularly its navigation and steering.
 

Drive

portion of the stroke at which point he blade moves through the water, force is being exerted and the boat is being propelled, the work portion of the stroke, movement of the blade from the catch or entry to the finish or release
 

Feathering

rotation of the oar in the oarlock
 

Finish

position at the back of the slide, body position at which the blade exits the water, also used to refer to the release of the blade from the water
 

Hull

body of the boat
 

Port

the left side of the boat when facing the bow
 

Recovery

portion of the stroke at which point the blade moves over the top of the water from the release or finish back to the catch position, the relaxed portion of the stroke
 

Rigging

apparatus used to fasten the oar to boat, also can refer to the seat, slide and foot stretcher mechanism
 

Scull

two-oared rowing, also used to refer to a single person boat
 

Shell

boat
 

Starboard

the right side of the boat when facing the bow
 

Stern

“rear” of the boat in relation to the direction of movement
 

Sweep

one-oared rowing, rower is either port or starboard rower
 

Weigh Enough
